about

How many times have you wanted to tell the person next to you that they should clap along to the music on 2 and 4? This title couldn’t be any better! Listening to this album will most definitely make you want to clap your hands and stomp your feet! James Witherite and company do a wonderful job making this project jump, swing, move, and groove! In addition to drummers Kevin Lowe and Cory Caruso, veteran guitarist Ken Karsh—who shared the stand with organ giants Jimmy McGriff and Gene Ludwig—brings his knowledge of the language and complements James well. Organists and guitarists are like hand in glove: as one comps, the other solos, and vice versa. Here you can tell Ken has great vocabulary in both backing and soloing in the “O.G.D.” organ trio format.

On this date, James not only plays incredibly well, but also showcases his writing ability, composing the first eight songs beautifully and with great variety! From the great grooving funky feel of “35th and Archer” to the modulating changes within the turnarounds of “Halfway There” to the ending of the 6/8 gospel “I Profess” (sure to take you to church!), James’s experience in the music business and his maturity show throughout. He even performs a wonderful vocal rendition of “New York State of Mind”, one of my most favorite songs! Whether he’s soloing, comping, or playing a part of an arrangement, he chooses great voicings and rhythms as part of his library, moving the music well!

In conclusion, I’d like to congratulate James on a job very well done! I love this recording, and I know you will too! - Tony Monaco
